Unit for the Deaf
The unit for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired at Ennis Community College.
The unit for the Deaf was set up in 1998 at the request of parents of Deaf students in the area.
The Aim of the unit is to provide an integrated education for Deaf students in their locality, removing the necessity for them to travel to the residential schools for the Deaf in Dublin, as was historically the case.
Teachers and SNA’s with Sign Language accompany the students into their various subjects or resource help depending on the communication needs of students. When students are not attending a mainstream class for example Irish class, they return to their base classroom for resource work in their other subjects. Extra time is also allocated to the resourcing all other subjects.
Students attending the unit for the Deaf and Hearing impaired sit the Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate and aim to continue to third level education.
During the state exams we insure that the following Reasonable Accommodations are adhered to:
• Separate Centres
• Reader with Irish Sigh Language
• Extra Time
